Group Displays and Collaborative Projects for QLUG

As a group, we currently have 3 group displaying opportunities established.

They are Minifigure Habitats, Micropolis City and Great Ball Contraption (GBC).

We will also be starting a group Minecraft and a Winter scene build.

Other small individual builds of good quality are always welcome!
(please limit to less than a 32×32 baseplate in size).

If jumping into displaying at events is daunting, joining the group builds is a great way to start!
You don’t need to physically attend events to include your MOC.

Minifigure Habitats

These are built to a standard size and are designed to show case 1 or more minifigures. The original concept was borrowed from TOROLug who have built collectible series habitats. We modified this idea to include ANY minifigure characters, so long as they are built into a scene.

Sunshine Coast Brick Event 2016

The Standard:

Dimensions are a 12×12 footprint (base) and it must be exactly 8 bricks high, no higher please (3 plates equals a brick) and preferably the bottom of your build should have 1 brick edging for display consistancy. You may double the width, but not the height. It needs to be structurally sound with your walls interlocked at the corners. Please limit any capping tiles to the first 5 studs at the front as they are stacked cascade style as shown above. Pick your favourite minfig (not just cmf) and get building! Add images of your habitats to the group post on facebook too :)

Micropolis City

(Bricksbane is retired for 2017, though individual blocks may still be displayed)

Queensland LEGO User Group Micropolis City
MICROPOLIS! Small scaled city modules that click together to form a larger cityscape.

Sunshine Coast Brick Event 2016Each is built to a standard size so they can be added to as we get more people participating. They are very similar in style/scale to the Bricktober exclusives that Toys R US has, but in MOC. We will follow the TwinLug standards, just as they do for the Brickvention Micropolis (one of their group builds) .You can find information about the Micropolis standard here, including LDD files: http://twinlug.com/micropolis-micro-city-standard/ There are heaps of ideas to be found in the Micropolis Flickr group too. https://www.flickr.com/groups/1148237@N21/ So get building! Whether you can only manage a 1/4 block or are inspired to build full city blocks, it all connects to make something AWESOME! We need a mix of larger tall buildings for the CBD, green spaces and recreational blocks, lower density retail blocks, low density housing, and industrial blocks. If you can only make something tiny, there are waterfront blocks that need boats. Please be sure to add photos to the group facebook post too :) Here is a link to our City Directory of blocks.

Great Ball Contraption

The Great Ball Contraption was our very first group build and members are encouraged to join in and make it bigger and better!   Sunshine Coast Brick Event 2016

For those who have never seen this before, a great ball contraption (GBC) is a machine which receives soccer balls or basketballs from one module and passes them to another module, rather like a bucket brigade. Modules built according to the GBC standard can be assembled into a collaborative display without pre-planning or modification. The GBC standard is minimal, permitting the builder great flexibility in designing the mechanism by which balls are moved from the input to the output. The otherwise pointless handling of balls, and the myriad ways this is accomplished, gives great ball contraptions the impression of a Rube Goldberg machine.

Check out this thread in Eurobricks for inspiration.

So get inspired! Get building :) The GBC is AWESOME!!!!

Anyone from outside QLUG is welcome to join us on your QLD holiday, should it align with show dates and location. Just be sure your MOCs are of good quality and meet the standards above. Contact us asap with photos of your completed MOC at admin@qlug.org so we can add you in as an exhibitor.

Upcoming group Collaborative displays

Minecraft
(Retired for 2017)

We will be starting a minecraft theme display in May 2016. If you would like to build something for it, your MOC must be to the scale and style of the current LEGO Minecraft theme sets. You must build something other than a set and preferably include at least 1 LEGO Minecraft character and 1 mob. What we don’t want to see is any non-theme minifigures. This is a PURE Minecraft display. Beyond those simple standards, get creative and have fun!

Winter Theme
(Retired for 2017)

We will start building this hopefully for May 2016. We have a bunch of winter related LEGO to turn into a new scene as a group activity Add your winter themed MOCs to this scene. Please keep to LEGO City scale for this display and try to limit your individual builds to no larger than a 32×32 baseplate.
